CAMA celebrates longstanding role in Aotearoa’s podcasting movement

As the NZ Podcast Summit kicks off for another year, the Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA) is proud to celebrate the sector’s deep roots in Aotearoa’s podcasting history and ongoing commitment to supporting podcast creators.

CAMA stations like Free FM, Wellington Access Radio, and Fresh FM were among the first in the country to explore podcasting, experimenting with limited episodes as far back as 2007.

When Technology & Business commentator Paul Spain brought together one of New Zealand’s first podcasting meet-ups in the 2010s, Free FM’s Phil Grey was in the room, ensuring the CAMA sector was represented. That tradition continues today, with Free FM not only sponsoring the summit year after year, but turning up in full force, gear, team, and enthusiasm in tow.

“What’s really funny is when the MC hands the mic around, and it feels like every third person there is a ‘Freester’,” says Grey.

“It’s great having Free FM recognised as the Waikato’s ‘home of podcasting’, but what’s important is that the summit supports podcasters at all levels, even aspiring podcasters. And that alone is worthy of our support.”

The summit’s kaupapa—to connect, upskill, and strengthen Aotearoa’s podcasting community—aligns naturally with the mission of CAMA stations nationwide.

“Year on year, the Summit is planned and run as a hui for Aotearoa’s podcasting community to meet, collaborate, learn, and grow,” says teacher, journalist, podcaster and summit organiser Dr Lewis Tennant.

“It’s a wharenui for producers, presenters, practitioners, and providers — and anyone else keen to get into podcasting. That’s the same spirit that drives Community Access Media. It’s been awesome having Phil and the Free FM team involved from the get-go. The day wouldn’t feel the same without the arrival of the Hamilton-to-Summit van convoy.”

From early adoption to ongoing leadership, the CAMA sector continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing the voices and stories that shape Aotearoa. The NZ Podcast Summit is just one of the many ways that commitment comes to life.
