Access media delighted to welcome new media and communications minister 27th November 2023 The Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA), on behalf of the 12 access media stations throughout Aotearoa, is delighted to welcome new media and communications minister, Melissa Lee. Minister Lee has had a wonderful longstanding relationship with the sector and is a regular guest on Planet FM’s flagship Korean community programme, KCR. In her capacity as National Party broadcasting spokesperson in 2021, Minister Lee also passed an official motion in the House of Representatives to acknowledge the 40th anniversary of the sector and its contributions to promoting public-interest broadcasting. At the time, Minister Lee said the role of access media to inspire and support local communities across Aotearoa was a precious part of our Kiwi culture. “Access Radio is the original podcasting platform supporting ethnic and diverse New Zealanders telling their stories and sharing their values. The media landscape is a better place for our Access media broadcasters and we should cherish them”Fast forward to 2023, CAMA executive co-chair Jo Holsted says in its decades-long history, access media has grown to become an important and deeply democratic feature of the media landscape in Aotearoa.“As that landscape changes, we are as committed as ever to ensuring diverse, local voices are truly and fairly represented. It is heartening to be supported by a minister who recognises the importance of the role we play in upholding that representation.” Fellow executive co-chair Natalie Robb says it is crucial representation, knowledge, and understanding of the communities access media serves increases as a whole. “Access media provides the opportunity for underserved communities to have a voice – whether that’s through connecting with others, or providing help and assistance. “Representation of these communities increases the knowledge and understanding of communities as a whole, thus enhancing the general well-being of the whole population.” To increase the reputation, visibility, efficacy, and viability of a sector, CAMA has also released its inaugural Access Media Annual Report 22/23.
